Sanofi Group Senior Scientist Drug Product in Waltham, Massachusetts

Position Overview:

The Senior Scientist will be a part of the multi-disciplinary and multi-modality Global Drug Product Development & Manufacturing group. The candidate will primarily support Biopharmaceutical Drug Product development projects for Gene Therapy (in support of the Genomic Medicine Unit) and Protein therapeutic programs. The incumbent will have the opportunity to work on different facets of drug delivery and product development for different modalities such as Lipid Nanoparticles (LNPs), gene therapy capsids (recombinant AAV capsids), Cell Therapy and Protein/Enzyme therapeutics

Key Responsibilities:

This role will primarily be responsible for designing Lipids and Lipid Nanoparticle formulations for clinical and commercial use. In addition, the candidate will also be responsible for lipid synthesis, product characterization, technology transfer, and GMP manufacturing support. Specifically:

  • Design and develop novel chemistry approaches and synthesize lipids for development of LNP formulations for drug delivery.

  • Support and execute lipid characterization and manufacturing.

  • Design and execute different bioconjugation techniques for ligand conjugation.

  • Work closely with other cross functional chemistry teams to provide technical guidance on lipid design.

  • Develop experimental plans and execute studies to assess physicochemical stability of lipids, LNPs and other biologic drug candidates.

  • Work independently with counterparts from other functional areas to deliver on CMC milestones while adhering to broad project timelines.

  • Generate, document and compile data for team and senior management discussions, development reports and regulatory filings.

  • Mentor and provide training to junior staff as required

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in Medicinal Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences or a related discipline with a minimum of 4 years of relevant industry experience or a Master’s degree with 8 years or Bachelor’s degree with 10 years of relevant industry experience.

  • An understanding of fundamental biopharmaceutical principles for the development of injectable drug products of biologic drug candidates.

  • Experience in designing lipids and polymers for nucleic acid delivery.

  • Proficient and knowledgeable in lipid synthesis and GMP manufacturing.

  • Knowledge of analytical and biophysical characterization techniques such as HPLC, LC/MS, NMR, DSC, CD, DLS and fluorescence spectroscopy.

  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced team environment.

  • Basic understanding of statistical data analysis.

  • Excellent communication, teamwork and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 2 years of direct experience working as a part of drug product or drug delivery teams involved in design of lipids and lipid nanoparticles.
