Sanofi Group Scientist, Process Operation and Modeling in Waltham, Massachusetts

Position Overview:

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a mindset to implement changes that will be recognized as technical expert in the field of data and modeling with expertise in application on pharmaceutical processes. The successful candidate will work in a cutting-edge scientific department to demonstrate the benefits of system modeling and data science developing the next generation of Sanofi medicines that will improve the quality of life for patients across the world.

This role is part of the newly formed Process Operation and Modeling department of the CMC Synthetics organization located in Waltham, MA, that will ultimately move to Cambridge, MA.

The team is responsible for the development of the small molecule NCE portfolio and the process improvement of the legacy portfolio. We strongly believe that innovation in process development and manufacture, data science and process modelling will be the key driver to unlock the future of Pharma.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Bring knowledge and experience of DS and DP development and manufacture processes.

  • Partner with chemists, analysts, and chemical engineers from across Sanofi R&D and manufacturing organizations to develop processes.

  • Apply chemical engineering principles to develop scalable and robust processes for the manufacture of DS and DP products.

  • Support development activities such as process design, optimization and process control in both domain of Drug Substance and Drug Product using modelling technology.

  • Leverage engineering modeling to efficiently support the development, the design space definition and the optimum manufacture of processes.

  • Partner with experts in process analytical technology, automation and control to enable the delivery of integrated unit operations for API development and manufacture.

  • Perform experiments to understand reaction mechanisms and kinetics, thermodynamics and scale dependent factors.

  • Support technology transfer of API processes to internal Sanofi API manufacturing facilities and external suppliers

  • Develop and apply new and existing continuous process technologies to enable development and transfer of safe and scalable processes to API manufacturing facilities.

  • Apply chemical engineering skills and specific process knowledge to understand and resolve scale-up issues during transfer.

  • Lead the development and implementation of new and existing workflows and methodologies.

  • Collaborate and prepares internal research reports and technical presentations.

  • Collaborate and author external publications and present research at external conferences.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemistry or Chemical engineering or a Master’s degree with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in industry or academia.

  • Proven track record developing system models and process simulations.

  • Demonstrated application of Machine Learning methodologies.

  • Domain knowledge in small molecule with direct experience in either upstream or downstream development or manufacturing.

  • Experience in modeling using gPROMS, Aspen, DynoChem.

  • Some programing knowledge in e.g. Matlab, gPROMS, CFD.

  • An ability to work as part of a team, engaging other scientists with complementary skill sets in the field of Biopharmaceutics.

  • A change agent mentality, proposing novel approach to challenging scientific questions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Trained as a Process Engineer prior to PhD.

  • Some knowledge in Multivariate Analysis.

  • Experience in Advanced Process Control and automation.
