Sanofi Group Associate Scientist – Complement Biology Cluster in Waltham, Massachusetts
The Complement Biology cluster at Sanofi is seeking an experienced and highly motivated scientist to support therapeutic programs for complement driven diseases. The successful candidate will contribute to both characterization of disease state and discovery of novel candidate drugs, including the design and execution of proof of concept and validation assays. He/she will support projects from discovery research into early development as an active member of cross-functional teams. The candidate must be driven, resourceful, and able to work independently. Excellent organizational skills in management of data, reagents and equipment are essential. The candidate will participate in regular team meetings and present results, interpret data, and formulate conclusions. Teamwork, collaboration with colleagues across disciplines and excellent verbal and written communication skills are critical.
Essential Duties and Job Functions:
Plan, execute and troubleshoot experiments to support advancement of drug candidates including:
In vitro, functional assays to characterize complement activity such as the Wieslab assay or red blood cell hemolysis assay
In vivo experiments in rodents to assess novel Complement inhibitors
Equilibrium binding studies to assess protein:protein interactions such as ELIS
Participate in assay development to enhance our understanding of disease mechanisms including:
Supporting cloning, expression, and protein purification for complement proteins
Characterization of preclinical and clinical study samples
Isolation and manipulation of blood components, namely plasma, serum, and red blood cells from human samples and/or non-human primates
Determination of complement protein levels in samples by western blot
Analyze and interpret data and draw conclusions from the above-mentioned experiments to help decide next steps
Work productively in cross-functional teams:
Coordinate material transfer and provide as needed in vitro assay support to other functions
Actively communicate recommendations to the drug candidate project team to help select lead molecules for advancement to the next stage of research or development
Communicate progress by presenting at a weekly department-wide meeting to maintain project visibility
Work independently with minimal supervision
Stay current with scientific literature
- Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biophysics, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry or a related field in the Life Sciences plus minimum 1 year of relevant research experience in industry or academia, including in vitro and in vivo assays involving blood/blood components OR Master’s Degree.
Prior experience with the Complement System is desired
Preference will be given to candidates with background in the biotech/pharma industry
Co-Authorship of peer-reviewed publications, patents and presentation is considered a plus
