Job Summary:

As the Attending Veterinarian, the incumbent must ensure that animal studies planned in support of Industrial Operations and Research meet veterinary standards, maintaining humane animal care and husbandry as required by the Ontario Animals for Research Act, the Guidelines of the Canadian Council on Animal Care and AAALAC. The role has responsibility for on-site vivarium facilities and relevant husbandry operations. It also provides consultation and instruction to investigators and technical staff in animal care, pre-and post-procedural care, new procedures, aseptic surgery, and related topics and ensures the procurement of suitable and healthy animals from appropriate sources. The position also assists in assuring that product testing, research animal studies, special studies such as reference/reagent qualification and studies to troubleshoot testing problems are completed in a timely manner following appropriate cGxPs, SOPs, and regulatory requirements.

Job Accountabilities:

  1. Provide site veterinary services to ensure all animal testing is performed according to relevant guidance and best practices for humane animal care and husbandry:
  • Maintenance of animal care standards and site specific licenses/certifications from national/international agencies (AAALAC, CCAC, OMAFRA).

  • Membership in the Institutional Animal Care Committee.

  • Clinical veterinary functions.

  • Oversight of Vivarium functions and assists Deputy Director with departmental budget.

  • Provides veterinary consultation, disease assessment and diagnosis to provide optimal veterinary care.

  • Review animal necropsy/histopathology results.

  • Generate yearly reports for site animal usage for CCAC, OMAFRA, AAALAC. Oversee the animal colony health care program to provide high quality animal QC test and research study models.

  1. Implement and maintain quality practices within area of influence to ensure departmental compliance with relevant internal and external regulatory agencies:
  • Participate in internal and external inspections and audits (e.g. animal vendor audits).

  • Reviews all health reports and assures their accuracy.

  • Assists with Post Approval Monitoring program at Sanofi Pasteur.

  • Hold regular meetings with the head of SQO (e.g. AVP, SQO).

  • Report animal, facility and personnel issues and concerns to the appropriate level (e.g. AVP, SQO).

  • Respond to queries from animal welfare and regulatory agencies (e.g. CCAC, AAALAC, OMAFRA).

  • Work with ACC coordinator and ACC chair to ensure animal ethics and welfare in animal care and use.

  • Ensure Sanofi Corporate policy on the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement) in animal use for testing and research.

  • Map internal/external animal usage for Global Sanofi Animal Welfare office .

  1. Provide consultation to ensure proper training for current and new test procedures, animal handling, husbandry and technical procedures:
  • Determines appropriate procedures to be followed and advises Site Quality Operations on procedures.

  • Assists with training analysts and technicians.

  • Reviews all current literature, attends appropriate meetings, participate in continuing education initiatives to maintain competencies and bring new procedures to SQO.

  • Provide guidance to research personnel on selection of animal models and protocol development.

  • Participate in collaborative projects, scientific discussions and process improvement initiatives with other departments (e.g MTtech, ARD).

  • Liaise with other Sanofi affiliates (e.g. US, France, Germany) to gain knowledge of standard animal care practices being utilized.

  1. Staff development; promote individual responsibility for personal and departmental improvement through the use of objectives and training initiatives:
  • Assist with formulation and implementation of process improvement strategies

  • Provide coaching, guidance and monitor staff performance.

  • Promote teamwork and company values to sustain a productive working environment.

  • Cascade pertinent information in a timely fashion.

  • Advise staff on growth and career development (e.g. continuing education). Review and refine animal procedure specific SOPs.

  • Keep awareness of current and novel techniques and processes to improve current practices.

  1. Review of documentation, staff training (initial qualification and requalification) on lesson plans as required by the company and various regulations:
  • Ensure animal documentation is reviewed (eg animal orders, incoming animal reports, animal health monitoring records, primate shipment records, animal room logs etc).

  • Assist with staff training requirements in animal handling and procedures (e.g. animal injection techniques, necropsy procedure).

  • Assist BioResources management with maintenance of technical staff qualification and requalification.

  • Assist to troubleshoot and resolve repetitive testing issues with animal tests.

Education and Experience:

  • Degree in Veterinary Medicine (e.g. BVSc, DVM, VMD).

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) and/or board-certification in applicable specialty or a desire to pursue board certification.

  • Current and working knowledge and experience with Animal Care Committees.

  • Current and relevant working knowledge of animal care and use regulations and guidance.

  • At least three year experience working with laboratory animals in a University Lab Animal Facility, Government Research Lab or other biological or pharmaceutical company.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with excellent written, verbal, and organizational skills .

Certification:

  • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the Province of Ontario.
