The mission of MTECH function is to deliver robust and efficient process & testing with associated know how transfer to Manufacturing & QC. MTECH function also provides daily support manufacturing and QC toward industrial performance excellence.

Job overview

The Manager Scientist – Viral technologies, within the Manufacturing Technology (MTECH) department of Vaccine Industrial Affairs leads the execution of small scale development and/or troubleshooting studies and large scale validations to support the manufacturing of viral vaccines. This includes the execution of small scale experiments (egg inoculation and harvesting, purification, and assays), scale-up, and commercial scale validations to assist troubleshooting in operations, continuous improvement and licensing of new viral vaccines with high technical and scientific complexity. The individual in this position will (lead or be involved) in cross –functional teams from various functions in VIA to deliver the following:

Responsibilities

  • Technical expert for the egg-based viral processes and drug substance manufacture activities for Influenza and Yellow Fever (egg inoculation and harvesting, purification, inactivation, and testing).

  • Leads/conducts execution of small scale experiments and supports large scale validations.

  • Leads problem solving where analysis of situations of defined scope or data requires in-depth evaluation of identifiable factors.

  • Independently provide technical expertise for design, perform data analysis, and publish protocols/reports/procedures.

  • Influences internally; forward thinking with an attitude of collaboration, optimization, efficiency, continuous improvement.

  • Proactively anticipates and effectively communicates successes, constraints, conflicts, solutions and actions for resolution.

  • Proactively resolves conflicts, removes roadblocks to execution within sphere of influence; escalates to functional management when appropriate.

  • Fosters relationships with partners, experts from other functions and customers in order to achieve technical objectives.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters in basic sciences, math, engineering, or pharmacy.

  • Experience with laboratory techniques and safety.

  • Candidate should possess educational and professional experience, commensurate with the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a cGMP environment

  • Experience with egg-based viral vaccine production processes

  • Experience with large scale process validations

Terms of employment

  • The hired candidate will have no direct reports

  • Preferred start date: July 2019

  • The candidate will work during normal business hours (8am-5pm Monday – Friday), but flexibility for occasional work outside of these hours is necessary
