Sanofi Group Senior Scientist- Protein Sciences, Purification in San Diego, California

Position Overview:

As a member of the scientific research team, located in La Jolla, CA the Associate Scientist is responsible for developing, leading, and executing all steps of protein purification and scale-up. The Associate Scientist provides principal scientist / senior management with technical proficiency, scientific creativity and professional concepts and procedures to methodically solve problems. He/She is responsible for design and execution of experiments, data analysis and process development/improvement discussions.

Key Responsibilities:

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Design, implement, trouble-shoot, delegate, and execute scientific research and development projects to meet timelines.

  • Ability to work independently and proactively, and lead research projects as represented by scientific publications, conference presentations and patent filings.

  • Establish methods for refolding and purification of expressed proteins.

  • Experimentally develop novel methods to optimize yields from protein purification processes.

  • Develop standard operating procedures, document protocols and technology transfer.

  • Prepare and present project updates to ensure timely delivery.

  • Maintain a high standard for quality control including up-to-date data records for all protein deliveries, including basic understanding of HPLC and mass spectrometry methods for QC.

  • Troubleshoot challenging technical, experimental, and instrumental issues.

  • Strong subject matter expertise in downstream purification operations, including chromatography (affinity, ion exchange, HIC, reversed phase and multi-mode), membrane separation, targeted precipitation, protein refolding of inclusion bodies, etc.

  • Train and lead junior/new team members.

  • Provide technical guidance and training to co-workers for the use of current and new equipment in the Protein production team.

  • Responsible for maintenance of AKTA and new equipment within the Production Team.

  • Consummate ability to work in a highly collaborative, fast-paced, cross-functional environment, with superior oral and written communication skills.

Education / Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree plus minimum 6 years of relevant research experience in an academic or biopharmaceutal setting OR Master’s Degree plus minimum 3 years of relevant research experience in an academic or biopharmaceutical setting OR PhD. No Post doc experience required.

  • Experience in developing research and scalable processes for protein purification. Hands-on experience with refolding of proteins from inclusion bodies, and filtration strategies (depth filtration, TFF) are a plus.

  • Hands-on experience with AKTA instrumentation is required. Extensive experience implementing various chromatography modalities (IEX, HIC, multi-mode, reverse phase and SEC), high throughput (HTP) purification strategies, and purification DOE are highly desirable.

  • Experience in protein characterization (SDS PAGE, Western Blotting, quantification, HPLC, cGE, endotoxin). Understanding of LC/MS methods for QC is a plus.

  • Regular activities require ability to communicate effectively and rapidly reprioritize to match dynamic and demanding timelines.

  • Basic understanding of cancer and/or immuno-biology.

  • Frequent communication (talking/hearing).

  • Regular sitting and reaching with arms.

  • Vision requirements: close, distance, peripheral, color and depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • Lifting up to 10 lbs.

  • Computer use: 30% of the time.

  • Noise conditions: Normal office / lab environment.

  • May work near moving mechanical parts or in a laboratory setting with chemicals, unpleasant odors, and in areas requiring personal protective equipment.

  • Interaction with laboratory equipment, samples, supplies, and laboratory personnel may be required whereby appropriate precautions are to be taken per the Company’s Safety and Injury, Illness and Prevention Plans.

  • Travel: Occasional.
