Sanofi Group Scientist I, Upstream Fermentation in San Diego, California
As a member of the scientific research team, the Scientist I in Upstream has a hands-on role executing lab scale bioreactors, collecting and processing samples, preparing fermentation experiment documents, and participating in data analysis and process development/improvement discussions. The Senior Associate Scientist / Scientist I provides principal scientist / senior management with technical proficiency, scientific creativity and professional concepts and procedures to solve methodical problem.
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Carry out experiments and collect, process data under supervision of the principal scientist.
Understanding underlying science and fundamental concepts behinds the products in development.
Experimentally determine upstream conditions for microbial expression and specific to Synthorx platform.
Bioreactor setup, maintenance, and operation.
Sampling and sample analysis.
Mechanical and instrumentation troubleshooting.
Training of junior members.
Experimentally determine fermentation strategies to optimize yields for protein expression.
Contribute to fermentation process improvement activities using a data driven approach.
Collaborate cross-functionally with Platform and Target Development teams to ensure smooth continuity between fermentation and upstream and downstream technology processes.
Develop standard operating procedures, document protocols and technology transfer.
Prepare and present project updates to ensure timely delivery.
Maintain a high standard for quality control including up-to-date data records for all protein deliveries, including basic understanding of mass spectrometry methods for QC.
Troubleshoot challenging technical, experimental, and instrumental issues.
Consummate ability to work in a highly collaborative, fast-paced, cross-functional environment, with superior oral and written communication skills.
BS in biological science, chemical or biochemical engineering and 5+ years of lab experience or related field; OR MS and 2+ years experience in chemical or biochemical engineering of bio-related fields.
Experience with E. coli -based protein expression is highly desirable. The knowledge and experience of eucaryotic expression (yeast, mammalian cell) is plus
Experience setting up and operating lab scale bioreactors (DasGIP, BioFlo, AMBER) is a highly desirable. Experience with multiple fermentation mode is plus.
