Title: Utilities and Energy Manager

Reports to: Associate Director, Facilities Operations

Number of direct reports: 6

Role Summary

The Utilities and Energy Manager will direct the day to day activities of all utility technicians and contractors that support Sanofi Ridgefield utility systems which include: Chilled Water, Plant Steam, Domestic and Hot Water, Heating Hot Water, Compressed Air, Clean Steam, Water for Injection (WFI), Purified Water (PW), Nitrogen, Vacuum, HVAC, and Electrical system distribution. This position will ensure that sound corrective and preventive maintenance practices are performed to obtain reliable operation of critical equipment and processes. Additionally, this individual will work with various teams (Engineering, Maintenance, Metrology, Reliability, Operations and HSE) to lead the site energy management program. The individual will also work to bring the site to ISO 50001 certification. The Utilities and Energy Manager follows strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and cGMP's in a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility.

Role Responsibilities

  • Lead all assigned utility operations personnel and contractors in assuring all requirements of their assignments and responsibility are clearly communicated and understood.

  • Manage daily, weekly and monthly process for overseeing the operation of the services being delivered.

  • Foster a culture of teamwork, compliance, quality, safety and productivity.

  • Take prompt action to remediate employee performance issues while recognizing and rewarding positive results and performance.

  • Coordinate with manufacturing to complete necessary work with minimal disruption to operations. Ensure continuous reliable uninterrupted service for all critical systems that support a 24/7 manufacturing operation.

  • Work with Engineering and Reliability to improve reliability and performance of production process equipment and utility equipment.

  • Actively contribute to the improvement of standard and emergency procedures and control room practices to cGMP standards.

  • Serves as project manager to coordinate and sometimes directly supervise utility outages and the performance of emergency and routine maintenance on utilities and facilities.

  • Identify opportunities to utilize the facility critical systems in a more efficient manner to improve reliability and reduce operating costs.

  • Manages respective corrective and preventive actions and work with our Quality group to ensure timely completion of investigations and CAPA implementations.

  • Support Internal and external audits as required.

  • Manage staff training and verify staff are trained and fully qualified to perform their duties.

  • Ensure that all regular scheduling, vacations, and other time off work for operations team members are properly documented for payroll and attendance records.

  • Work with planning and scheduling for timely completion of daily corrective and preventative maintenance work. Efficiently coordinate the workflow and documentation of work orders.

  • Assist Facility Department Head with annual facilities budget, approve expenditures, create and issue purchase orders, and forecast expenses. Submit capital requests as needed to support equipment replacement, upgrades, and other improvements.

  • Partner with Engineering to ensure successful commissioning and qualification activities, and ensure the successful transition of projects into day-to-day operations.

  • Ensure a safe work environment is maintained through adherence to safety guidelines and policies.

  • Communicates effectively with respect to verbal, written, and listening skills.

  • Help establish departmental goals and expectations of direct reports.

Qualifications

  • BS in Engineering required. Masters Preferred. Mechanical, Chemical or Electrical with requisite experience. Certified Energy Manager (CEM) strongly preferred.

  • A minimum of 5 Years cGMP industrial experience, ideally covering Operations, Engineering, Projects and Validation within a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.

  • A minimum of 5 years managing, coaching and directing a staff in a maintenance or utility function.

  • Must be proficient with respect to the operation and maintenance of various utility systems.

  • Have a thorough knowledge of utility equipment, building and process control systems, using drawings, manuals, specifications, standard operating procedures, and be able to use proper judgment when taking corrective actions during equipment malfunction.

  • Keeps current with latest state of the art practices, regulatory trends and regulations.

  • Team player with exceptional customer service skills, integrity and ability to interact with all levels of personnel.

  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills as well as problem analysis and resolution. Lives the cultural beliefs of the organization, leads by example and has the flexibility to adapt to changing business priorities. Is open to and actively seeks out feedback on their performance and translates that feedback into action.

  • Experience with writing and implementing operations procedures.

  • The ability to effectively interact with various internal and external stakeholders and departments.

  • Ability to analyze the performance and operating efficiency of the systems to optimize energy use and production. Experience developing and/or maintaining an ISO50001 certified energy management system strongly preferred.

  • Strong computer skills (AutoCAD strongly preferred, Microsoft Office suite of products).

  • Must possess strong work ethic (exemplary attendance, self-starter and highly motivated).

  • Willing to work off-shifts and weekends as needed to support activities.

  • Experience with computer based maintenance management systems (Infor EAM).

  • Capable of managing maintenance shutdown activities.

  • Experience working in controlled or clean room environments requiring special gowning. Will be required to follow gowning requirements and wear protective clothing over the head, face, hands, feet and body. No make-up, jewelry, contact lenses, nail polish or artificial fingernails may be worn in these work environments.
