Sanofi Group Sr. Scientist –Analytical Development in La Jolla, California

Position Overview:

Synthorx, a Sanofi Company, employs a novel synthetic biology platform to discover and develop transformational protein therapeutics for the treatment of cancer and autoimmune disorders. Our early-stage bioanalytical development team seeks a Sr. Scientist to support R&D efforts for strain engineering, lead candidate selection and characterization, process development, and data generation for regulatory filings. This role requires an ability to develop innovative analytical solutions for technically challenging problems. The qualified candidate will report to the team lead bioanalytical development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide analytical expertise and support for early-stage analytical projects in support of our unique Synthorx platform.

  • Propose, develop, and implement new platform technologies to increase analytical capabilities, plays a key role in improving processes, procedures.

  • Support characterization of PTMs and quantitation of unnatural amino acid incorporation (fidelity) throughout lead to drug candidate steps.

  • Develop targeted and label-free quantitative peptide assays to support fidelity and titer methods throughout the product development cycle.

  • Design and implement new analytical methods for the characterization of PEGylated proteins, mAbs, antibody fragments using state of art technologies including LC-MS and MS/MS.

  • Provide scientific knowledge and practical experience to develop separation methods, e.g. RP, IEX, HILIC, SEC and affinity chromatography for quantitative and qualitative analysis.

  • Apply extensive hands-on experience with various software packages and instrumentation including LC-QqTOF mass spectrometry, nano LC-MS/MS, Orbitrap MS, UV-VIS spectrophotometry, data base searching, intact mass analysis etc. to support method development and fast data turnaround.

  • Manage priorities, plan experiments, conduct analysis, prepare research reports and presentations for project meetings and present results to project teams.

  • Communicate scientific data and concepts effectively through presentations, protocols, and reports

  • Develop laboratory standard operation procedures and provide expertise for review of internal and external methods.

  • Collaborate with internal and external teams and provide support to different functional groups as needed. Provide timely feedback to project teams.

  • The Senior Scientist will also be responsible for managing and developing junior scientists while supporting R&D activities.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in analytical chemistry or related disciplines with 5+ years of relevant experience or a B.S./M.S. degree with 10+ years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry.

  • Substantial scientific knowledge and hands-on experience in protein structure elucidation, identification and quantitation of related impurities or PTMs and degradants using LC-MS/MS.

  • Practical experience in protein or peptide quantitation by mass spectrometry using targeted or label-free approaches.

  • Masters software and bioinformatic strategies for protein identification and quantitation.

  • Working knowledge of HDX-MS is a plus.

  • Ability to work with different LC-MS systems and software, performing routine maintenance and troubleshooting.

  • Experience characterizing pegylated proteins, unnatural amino acids, ADCs preferred but not necessary.

  • Experience with liquid handlers and programming thereof is a plus.

  • Familiarity with ICH, USP and FDA requirements for method development validation.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and team-orientated environment, and commitment to a collaborative and professional workplace.

  • Excellent organization skills and ability to multi-task and manage priority.

  • Excellent computer skills: proficiency with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint required.

  • Good oral and written communication skills a must.
