Senior Scientist – Renal and Musculoskeletal Diseases

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Scientist with a strong background in muscle biology to join a team of researchers developing new therapies for neuromuscular diseases. The candidate will design and execute assay development, preclinical pharmacology, and mechanisms of action studies using in vitro and in vivo models of skeletal muscle disorders. He/she will use their expertise in musculoskeletal biology to model pathogenic mechanisms responsible for muscular dystrophies, develop functional assays and protocols for the analysis of muscle strength, and other readouts of muscle wasting disorders. The Senior Scientist will be expected to communicate scientific data to internal and external audiences. The successful candidate will introduce new therapeutic concepts and have the opportunity to lead a drug discovery project team while working with scientific platforms, clinical development, and commercial units to champion projects from discovery to pre-clinical development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Works as part of a research team to discover and develop therapeutic strategies for rare neuromuscular disorders applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts

  • Coordinates research efforts and provides key technical and intellectual contributions that affect the direction of research endeavors in the laboratory

  • Follows directives in an expeditious manner to aggressively achieve goals within the expected timelines

  • Presents at multiple project team meetings and departmental meetings

  • Helps establish collaborations with other labs within the Rare and Neurological Disorders Research Therapeutic Area, with other therapeutic areas at Sanofi, and with external institutions

  • Shares expertise for the critical evaluation of external opportunities in rare diseases and gene therapy

  • Must be prepared to contribute to the preparation of publications, intellectual property, research and clinical/regulatory documentation in accordance with the quality standards established by Sanofi

  • Commits to operational excellence according to the values and ethics expected of every employee at Sanofi

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. with a minimum of 4 years of post-doctoral experience in a laboratory with a track-record of substantial scientific achievements in the field of muscle disorders

  • The candidate’s expertise in muscle biology must be substantiated by an adequate publication record

  • Extensive knowledge and experience with murine models of muscular dystrophies, such as Duchenne’s and other muscle disorders with a well-characterized genetic cause

  • Hands-on experience with state-of-the-art techniques for the measurement of skeletal muscle, heart and diaphragm function, molecular biology, cell biology, or genetics

  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team

  • Proficiency in the use of software for data analysis and presentation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with cellular models of human muscular diseases is highly desirable

  • Familiarity with large non-rodent in vivo models of muscular dystrophies is desirable

  • Experience with current technologies for nucleotide-based therapy applications

  • Effectiveness as a mentor for subordinates and junior scientists

  • Ability to clearly convey scientific concepts through written and verbal communication
