Sanofi Group HSE Associate II in Framingham, Massachusetts

Position Overview:

This position will support the Health, Safety and Environment programs for the Framingham R&D site. This position is accountable and responsible for ensuring that HSE programs are in place with appropriate HSE support and for advancing the HSE Culture. This position is highly visible and requires proven ability to interact and influence management and all levels of the organization in order to identify, assess and reduce risks associated with rapidly changing technologies involved in the drug discovery and development process as well as those associated with construction projects.

This position may also participate in programs across all of the NA Sanofi sites to share specific expertise from the candidate.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement, monitor and participate in the development of company environmental, health and safety programs.

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental and occupational regulations and permits at assigned sites.

  • Conduct comprehensive environmental, health and safety inspections of facilities.

  • Provide technical assistance and advice to laboratory managers and employees regarding environmental health and safety issues.

  • Ensure the communication of environmental health and safety matters at assigned sites.

  • Conducts accident/incident investigations.

  • Serve as lead on certain environmental, health and safety projects.

  • Perform work that requires decision making and the consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion.

  • Influence decision making around EHS at various levels within the organization.

  • This position provides strong leadership and is accountable and responsible for HSE programs ensuring the HSE Management System is in place with appropriate HSE support for Framingham R&D to ensure compliance with Sanofi and legal requirements; through interaction and influence of executive management to support the Framingham site in achieving continuous improvement in health, safety and environmental performance.

  • Lead the implementation and maintenance of comprehensive risk identification and management processes for Framingham R&D activities. Ensure processes are in place for communicating risks to the business units’ management and stakeholders (risk map). Work with R&D management to develop and track HSE performance improvement plans based on risks (PASS). Support the site emergency response teams to ensure a good quality emergency and crisis management system for the site.

  • Responsible for day-to-day coordination of contractor safety program, permit to work program ( includes LOTO/ work at elevation/JHAs), HSE Training, asphyxiation risk program, emergency response/crisis management, fire safety program, hearing conservation program, and ergonomic program meet Sanofi and regulatory standards for the Framingham R&D sites and to meet the HSE needs of the site with focus on 1 and 5 Mountain Road, and other campus locations as needed, determined by the HSE Manager.

  • Responsible for working directly with the site HSE program leads and coordinators to maintain site program documentation, evaluate the impact of new regulations and company standards on the site, ensure implementation of the programs as applicable to the site, track state specific regulations that affect the site, perform periodic regulatory and company standard compliance assessments of the programs at the site, submit timely documentation and input as required by the program coordinators, and be part of sub-teams as requested to assist in providing best practices across the sites.

  • Ensure HSE exposure and risk assessments are performed for all relevant research, development and operations activities at assigned locations. Report results to all affected personnel and implement action plans as needed to reduce exposures for site personnel. Follow up on all compliance plans to ensure completion and provide document control.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience developing and implementing HSE programs with increasing responsibility. Must be capable of providing technical HSE consultation and management influence for a diverse mix of technical and administrative functions. Demonstrated experience dealing in public forums is required.

  • Degree in Safety, Environmental, Science or related field required. Prior experience in pharmaceutical research/development or manufacturing is preferred.

  • This position is highly visible and requires the incumbent to have proven leadership abilities, and be self-motivated to work seamlessly and independently, to effectively influence employees and managers to meet HSE targets and objectives.

  • Must be able to work with all levels of employee populations and build relationships with others in order to improve overall efficiencies and effectiveness. Proactively shares relevant information and key learning with others so that they can benefit.

  • The incumbent must be able to handle multiple major and diverse issues and priorities. This person must be able to successfully manage workload under deadlines.

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills are required.

  • Recognized for high level of knowledge and creativity: acknowledged as an expert in two or more technical and/or functional areas.

  • Must be able to understand and assess new information and issues, effectively design, communicate and implement programs in a timely fashion.

  • The incumbent must have proven ability to identify, define and solve problems of major scope and complexity.

  • Must be thoroughly reliable on all assignments in order to meet business deadlines.

  • Strong leadership skills are essential including ability to influence others in a matrix organization as well as a line organization.

  • Must be flexible and willing to learn new or continually expand knowledge of HSE disciplines.
