Job Information

Sanofi Group Distinguished Scientist, Group Head, US Biologics Research Protein Production in Framingham, Massachusetts

Position Overview: Distinguished Scientist: US Protein Production and Characterization

At Sanofi we are committed in our quest to be a world-class biologics research organization and are steadfast in our goal to bring next generation, transformative therapies to patients. Our global Large Molecule Research (LMR) platform consists of five sites, and approximately 550 personnel focused on antibodies, nanobodies and synthorins as therapeutic modalities. Our platform enables and partners closely with other research platforms and Sanofi’s therapeutic areas (Immunology, Oncology, Rare Disease and Neurology) in the discovery and ultimate delivery of new candidate molecules into our pipeline.

To continue to build on our success in these efforts we are seeking an accomplished professional with deep experience in recombinant antibody and protein expression, purification and analytics to head the Protein Production team at our US site. This individual will work closely with other departmental group heads from the Molecular Biology, Antibody Discovery, and Protein Engineering teams and will report to the Head of US LMR Operations. This is an exciting opportunity to join a group of accomplished scientists focused on the design and realization of advanced therapeutic modalities, including multi-specific antibodies such as those that have recently entered the clinic (see: DOI: 10.1126/science.aan8630 and DOI: 10.1038/s43018-019-0004-z).

Key Accountabilities:

  • Lead and oversee the efforts and key deliverables of the US Protein Production and Characterization team within the US Biologics Research Department. Contribute to Sanofi’s Large Molecule Research (LMR) portfolio by coordinating the team’s efforts to produce and characterize high quality protein and antibodies to enable and ensure the timely progression of projects across the therapeutic areas from early validation studies through preclinical development.

  • Harness the full potential of an elite and growing team of at 8-10 scientists, expert in protein expression, purification and characterization and foster the continual development of its members. Directly manage at least several senior level scientists.

  • Develop and/or further optimize interfaces with other teams in the US Biologics Research Department, in particular, the Molecular Expression and Screening Technologies team (MEST) involved in the design and synthesis of expression constructs, in addition to the Antibody Discovery and Protein Engineering teams.

  • Contribute to efforts developing and optimizing methods to produce current and future multi-specific therapeutic molecule formats.

  • Lead, and/or oversee the leadership of team members on LMR projects in the context of biologics representative or target champion roles.

  • Participate as a core member of the Global Protein Production Central Support team, working within this transversal team to maximize utilization of global protein production resources and expertise.

  • Foster a mindset of continual improvement within the team by identifying creative and effective solutions to enable a “more, better, faster” approach to our work.

  • Help define, coordinate and employ strategic outsourcing practices, manage budgets, track costs, and optimize resource usage.

  • Provide biologics expertise as subject matter expert to internal and external colleagues and collaborators. Strive to publish and present- internally and externally to represent the department and/or Sanofi, respectively.

  • Anticipate the future needs of our partners in the therapeutic areas and other platforms in research and development and our capabilities to support them by driving improvements to our existing technologies and implementing innovative know-how.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Degree in natural sciences, bioengineering or related discipline: Bachelor’s plus a minimum of 18 years of relevant experience in an academic or biopharmaceutical setting OR Master’s degree plus a minimum of 18 years of relevant experience OR a Ph.D. plus a minimum of 10 years experience.

  • Sound understanding and record of accomplishment in drug discovery and development, particularly biologics, with deep expertise in protein and antibody production and analytical characterization.

  • Successful in designing and executing experimental and operational strategies to support R&D initiatives over both near and long-term time horizons. Develops and manages plans to achieve personal as well as team objectives.

  • A demonstrated ability to lead, build and nurture a strong talent pool, make decisions, and to effectively prioritize and multi-task.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Deep knowledge and/or hands-on experience producing and characterizing multi-specific antibodies and other complex protein formats, including know-how pertaining to the application of techniques such as BLI, SPR, ELISA, and mass spectrometry in their characterization.

  • A demonstrated track record of innovation in one or more areas relating to protein production, purification and characterization, including documentation of such in publications, patents, and/or presentations to the larger scientific community.

  • Familiarity with current methods applied in the areas of molecular biology, antibody discovery, and protein engineering.

LEAD Skills:

  • Operational excellence: project- and results-oriented, delivers on agreed objectives and on time; demands and drives scientific rigor and quality of execution; strives for more-better-faster.

  • Organizational leadership: teamwork; decision making; ability to set clear directions and objectives, and to motivate/engage/guide/empower teams to execute; ability to embrace and implement organizational change.
