Sanofi Group Senior Director Global Transactions in Cambridge, Massachusetts

POSITION OVERVIEW

Sanofi’s Global Transactions Team is part of Global Business Development & Licensing within the Sanofi Partnering department.

The main focus of this position is to lead and manage transaction execution with a strategic mindset, across Sanofi’s businesses and R&D units. Transactions will include opportunities across the entire drug development value chain, from discovery to commercial products. The role requires the application of portfolio strategy, business insight and industry knowledge to strengthen and expand Sanofi’s pipeline as well as existing business. The position maintains a close relationship and coordination with other Sanofi Partnering colleagues and internal stakeholders globally and regionally. The position also strides to build an external network. The position reports to the Head of Global Transactions.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Oversee, lead and manage execution of transactions and agreements across therapeutic areas and across drug development value chain (discovery, platform, pre-clinical, Phase 1-3, and commercial products) for strategic alliances, collaborations, in-licensing, co-development/commercialization, co- promotions, restructurings, substantive alliance amendments, clinical trial supply agreements, and the like), including directly managing negotiations with for particularly complex transactions. This role will also be managing junior transactions teams members on a project by project basis. As part of leading and managing transactions:

  • Support business case development, financial modeling, valuation, due diligence, leading deal structuring and leading negotiations to deliver executed deals.

  • Manage business relationships and counsel business partners, internally and externally, on transaction and strategic issues

  • Oversee or Lead presentations to senior management during dedicated decision-making committees.

  • Oversee or lead executed deal transition, including post-mortem analysis and formal meeting, to transition each deal to business owners and alliance management as needed.

  • Draw on central teams for legal, finance, IP and due diligence support as needed.

  • Coordinate executed deal handover to alliance management.

  • Train, coach, mentor and develop junior global transactions teammates.

  • Promote cross-functional collaboration within Sanofi Partnering, especially with therapeutic area business development and external innovation leads, as well as with internal business partners (R&D, Commercial, Finance, Legal, Patent, Manufacturing, etc.) to establish and maintain necessary governance, processes, corporate priorities and guidelines. Maintain awareness and knowledge of business ecosystem including understanding of trends, companies and key stakeholders.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with wide array of industry participants and key opinion leaders.

REQUIREMENTS

  • BA or BS required, MBA or advanced degree preferred.

  • 6 or more year(s) of experience in a business development and licensing role in life sciences desired, with appropriate deal list of substantive business development and/or M&A transactions in life sciences, including planning and project management, making presentations to senior management and developing business cases for business development opportunities. Proven ability to independently drive and lead transactions to successful conclusion.

  • 8 or more years of pharmaceutical/biotech experience (either in a company or as a consultant) are required. Commercial or analytical background in business development, life science consulting, life science banking, or equivalent desirable.

  • Broad cross-functional experience with demonstrated exposure and understanding of R&D, commercial, finance, legal, and intellectual property, strongly preferred. Deep knowledge and understanding of the drug development, approval, and commercialization process desirable.

  • Experience leading and directing both senior level and cross-functional groups to accomplish corporate goals.

  • Demonstrated success in negotiating or interacting directly with scientific, marketing and other senior management executives from the pharmaceutical and biotech industry.

  • Experience working in a matrix environment with track record of accountability and execution.

  • Strong analytical and communication (verbal and written) skills.

  • Gains commitment from team members and other colleagues to act and deliver on strategies, plans and goals.

  • Take action without being told – self-motivated to set priorities, drive projects forward, and drive for results that benefit the company and its stakeholders

  • Teamwork – ability to work effectively in and foster a team environment with colleagues who work in international locations and with outside partners, companies and investors.

  • The ability to inspire, motivate and coach is required;

  • Evidence of successful line management with strong coaching skills is highly preferred

  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally approximately 20-30% of the time to Sanofi companies and external partner sites, as well as to industry conferences.
