Sanofi Group Scientist - Vaccine in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Position Overview:

The position supports FluNXT studies on the development and evaluation of novel next-generation (NGF) and broadly protective influenza vaccine candidates using machine learning models.

The employee will contribute experimentally and intellectually to FluNXT tasks in the Operations-Virology Function through the use of molecular biology, virology, vaccine research and immunology methods. The candidate will be part of a dynamic R&D team developing candidate influenza vaccines. Employee will generate and characterize new vaccine candidates and immunological reagents, run molecular, biochemical and immunological tests, determine/develop methods/assays in new work tasks, troubleshoot when needed, and analyze data under the general direction from supervisor. In addition, employee will oversee management of Virology labs to include equipment maintenance, ordering general supplies, and maintaining lab compliance with HSE. Employee will grow viruses, express recombinant proteins, and maintain eukaryotic cell lines under standardized conditions, and maintain inventory and documentation. Employee will perform in vitro assays (and if necessary in vivo work in small animals such as mice) to contribute towards the discovery and preclinical evaluation of improved vaccines targeting influenza virus. Employee is responsible for documenting work in electronic lab notebooks and summarizing experimental findings and reporting results to the supervisor and team, and will contribute to technical writing (study reports, patents, manuscripts). Employee may be asked to perform other duties not listed in support of existing vaccine programs.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Rescue and characterize influenza viruses, and optimize for improved yields in different substrates under BSL2 conditions, and express and characterize recombinant protein vaccine candidate.

  • Assist the Immunology Group in processing samples and running assays during high demand.

  • Responsible for organizing, shipping, and receiving materials to external vendors as needed and maintaining internal materials inventory and includes database management.

  • Participate in lab/equipment maintenance, weekly inspections, and ordering lab supplies.

  • Maintain and update experiment notebooks according to company requirements.

  • Ensuring safe lab practices and BSL requirements while working in the laboratory and will serve as the HSE representative for the Group.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Candidate must have strong scientific and technical expertise, be proficient in molecular biology techniques and propagating viruses in substrates, and be able to work independently and as part of a dynamic team on complex multi-stage experimental tasks and to ensure completion within the overall project goal timelines.

  • Candidate will have a Bachelor’s (BS)/Master’s (MS) degree in relevant field with minimum 1 year of research lab experience in academia or industry.

  • Experience in cell culture and aseptic technique to handle BSL2 class agents is required.

  • Hands-on experience in executing assays such as ELISA, plaque assays, HA/NA titer assays is highly desirable.

  • Proficient in molecular biology techniques, including: DNA transfections, PCR, DNA sequencing, RNA extraction, RT-PCR, real-time PCR, mutagenesis.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite, Softmax Pro, VectorNTi, Sequencher, ImmunoSpot and GraphPad Prism or other statistical analysis software is a plus.
