Sanofi Group Global Head of Architecture and R&D Platforms in Cambridge, Massachusetts

This person will play a hands-on leadership role to develop and enhance our overall Digital R&D technology architecture and deliver high quality R&D platform products and services. This leader will ensure internal and external solutions are consistent to the overall strategies (Digital, Digital R&D, and R&D Strategy) as well as enterprise architecture guidelines, relevant roadmaps, and internal standards. Scope of work for team members in the group includes execution of team objectives, collaboration with pods & programs/projects deployed through agile methodology, and the participation in a global Digital community of architects.

The position will report directly to the Head of Digital R&D and be a member of the Digital R&D senior Leadership Team. This role will work closely with cross-functinoal Digital teams (e.g. Data, Infrastructure and Technology, Consumer Experience, the Agile COE, and the Enterprise Architecture council), pod/project development teams, and key R&D business stakeholders. Efforts will also include developing and reviewing business cases and identifying potential digital technologies that could support R&D business capabilities and their digital transformations. This leader will have direct people management responsibilities and accountability for several teams:

  • R&D Domain Architects – technical solution architects supporting the R&D Digital priorities within Research, Clinical, Regulatory Affairs, PV, and Medical.

  • R&D Platforms – team supporting the implementation and support of high-performance computing, domain-specific, data analytics needs within R&D (e.g. Clinical and Research).

  • Veeva and Appian CoE – team supporting the implementation and support of various Veeva products (e.g. RIM, eTMF, QMS, PromoMats, and MedComms) and Appian Business Process Mgmt. (BPM) applications

  • Portfolio and Project Planning – Product team providing full range of SDLC activities for portfolio and product related applications used within R&D for multiple GBUs (e.g. Pharma, Pasteur/Vaccines)

This resource will also drive continuous improvements within their scope inclusive of documentation, processes, governance, success measurement criteria, operating models and identification & diffusion of best practices, including Agile ways of working specific to Architecture.


  • Have solid experience in developing Information Technology (IT) roadmaps, architecture blueprints, and designing real world solutions.

  • Experience with both Waterfall and Agile methodologies (and tools e.g. Jira, Confluence)

  • Have a solid understanding of IT/Digital principles, IT/Digital solution design, and the application of them in the pharmaceutical industry and R&D domain.

  • Beneficial to have technical experience with AWS primary tech stack or Azure secondary, Informatica, Control M, Axway, Oracle, Snowflake, Prosgresql, and similar

  • Possess practical knowledge of business processes, business acumen, and related data within the pharmaceutical industry and R&D domain

  • Advanced understanding of R&D data and data analytics needs within R&D

  • Demonstrate excellent skills of translating requirements into workable, fit for purpose, technical designs and solutions. Have extensive experience on technical solution identification and rationalization.

  • Must be able to quickly adapt to a changing and highly dynamic work environment

  • Strong relationship management skills in working with business colleagues, Digital team members, senior leadership team members, and vendors

  • Develop teams in ways of working and adding new technologies/capabilities

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and/or influence decision making

  • Resolve conflicts with tact and diplomacy

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Fluent in English, both orally and in writing. Other language skills are a plus

  • Ability to work autonomously and work effectively with global teams to get the job done


  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related scientific or technical disciplines. Advanced degree is preferred. Additional professional certificate is a plus

  • 15+ years IT/Digital domain experience in pharmaceutical industry and R&D domain

  • Strong demonstrated experience in IT/Digital leadership, IT/Digital Implementation and Operational Support, senior stakeholder management, business partnering, and clear, effective communication skills (5+ years)

  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams with direct supervisory and people management responsibilities (5+ years)

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Deliver fit for purpose, high quality products, programs, and services across Architecture and high-performance computing R&D platforms.

  • Ensure product, service, and architecture alignment to overall strategies and roadmaps (Digital, Digital R&D, and R&D) and Enterprise Architecture principles & guidelines through Architecture Council. Ensure solutions developed are enabling Sanofi’s vision of the future.

  • Maximize re-usability of components built and participate to reduction of digital development time-to-market and application complexity.

  • Drive and support digital transformation and continuous improvements. Be a champion for helping Sanofi achieve its Digital aspirations. Identify and implement changes that result in increased efficiencies, higher value, and/or reduced costs.

  • People Management. Ensure our people are positioned for success to deliver on their objectives and support them in their career development.

  • Awareness of market/industry trends and vendor capabilities. Leverage them relevantly and practically to solve our real-world challenges.


  • Digital:

  • Digital R&D LT (Research, CMC, Clinical Trials, Medical, PV, Regulatory)

  • Enterprise Architect Council

  • Digital team Senior Leaders and their delivery teams (Data CoE, Consumer Experience, Digital Quality Operations, Technology, Infrastructure and Cybersecurity, Digital Transformation

  • Business:

  • R&D LT, key business leaders, stakeholders, and team members

  • Other business or GBU teams such as Industrial Affairs, Vaccines, and Commercial Business Units

  • Key External Stakeholders/Vendors:

  • Suppliers / Service Providers (such as, but not limited to Accenture, Cognizant, Veeva, Calyx, Medidata, SAS, Certara)


People Management: will have several direct reports requiring adequate people management experience and soft skills to manage and develop people on the team.

Geographic Coverage : personnel within the teams will be globally located mainly across the Eastern US (Massachusetts/New Jersey) and Europe (France/Germany). Some travel should be expected once global pandemic conditions are appropriately addressed or eliminated.
