Sanofi Group Associate Director, Portfolio Decision Resources in Cambridge, Massachusetts

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Global Portfolio Decision Resources’ overarching objective is to ensure a robust valuation and prioritization of the R&D portfolio. The team will work with key stakeholders in the R&D organization and the GBUs to provide support to leadership decision-making. The team’s remit is to:

  1. Ensure R&D asset valuation (including POS calculation, business case) is done in a rigorous and comparable basis across Sanofi, including the development of standard tools and an effective review process

  2. Provide challenge to project teams’ assumptions around probability of success and valuation, via:

  • Quantitative analysis of previous Sanofi performance and external benchmarks

  • Coordinating internal review/debate workshops from both R&D and commercial perspectives

  • Reviewing findings with external experts (where relevant) and internal senior leadership

  1. Use advanced analytics to inform and shape decision making by Global Project Teams (GPTs) and senior leadership (e.g. stage gate analysis to determine optimal development strategy, scenario analysis, decision trees, etc)

  2. Consolidate analyses into a holistic portfolio view for analysis (pipeline volume, continuity, value) and prioritization

  3. Facilitate and orchestrate prioritization and trade-off discussion among senior leaders

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Portfolio Decision Resources team is looking to add a team-oriented member to help execute on their mandate. As an Associate Director within this group, you will gain exposure to all of Sanofi’s therapy areas and come to truly understand the ‘nuts and bolts’ of the business. You will develop a deep understanding of core products and a detailed view of their development strategies and commercial impact.

You will interact directly with key stakeholders on project teams and senior management. Your ability to conduct complex analyses, present findings, and help facilitate decision-making will be critical for success. Responsibilities include:

Work with Global Project Teams to understand key R&D and commercial assumptions

  • Attend meetings with Global Project Teams to review and understand assumptions including target product profiles, probabilities of success and commercial potential

  • Develop a working knowledge of the therapeutic area and compare project assumptions to internal and industry benchmarks

Build, maintain and use portfolio and decision analysis tools

  • Support development of analytical frameworks and tools for project, program and portfolio-level decision-making

  • In collaboration with Global Project Teams, complete project-level commercial and financial models and ensure models contain the latest project assumptions

  • Structure and perform scenarios and simulations to model and value strategic alternatives and trade-offs

Synthesize results to support project-level and portfolio-level decision making

  • Generate key project insights to facilitate decision-making and strategy selection

  • Synthesize project assumptions and outputs into a clearly articulated value story

Participate in project and portfolio reviews

  • Develop supporting materials for meetings and contribute to leadership discussions

  • Help facilitate discussion of project-level strategic options and decision-making

QUALIFICATIONS:

We are seeking a professional with the following background:

  • 3+ years of directly relevant experience business experience in the life sciences industry (biotech, strategy consulting, investment banking)

  • Clearly demonstrated understanding of the pharmaceutical R&D process

  • Strong analytical skills including a mastery of Excel, a grasp of corporate finance principles, and previous experience with pharmaceutical NPV calculations

  • Good business judgment, communication (verbal and written)

  • Ability to synthesize information and present key findings in a crisp and concise manner

  • Maturity and leadership skills to be able to interact at senior levels

  • Excellent academics, with a science-focused BA / BS

The following preferred qualifications would be significant assets:

  • Advanced degree (PhD in Life Sciences, MD or MBA)

  • Previous experience with digital or visualization software (such as Tableau or other portfolio analytics/management software)

  • Previous experience in coding (such as Excel VBA or Matlab)
